29 - Update: Back from Alaska
Wow - It's hard to believe that I spent over three weeks in Alaska. It seems like forever, even though time flew by.
Breaking down in Chicken was one of the best experiences of the trip. I can't imagine a better way to begin an Alaskan adventure.
Tonight, nearly a month after I arrived in Chicken, I'm in Tacoma and staying with a retired Goldwing rider and his wife. During the last two days, I replaced the very bald tires on my bike. The equally as worn out rear suspension also came off to accommodate shiny new Progressive shocks. Working on my bike in a nice shop with good tools and with a friendly source ok Goldwing knowledge, was a real treat. Tomorrow I leave for Bainbridge Island, outside of Seattle, to stay with a great friend from my days in the GTE Leadership program. We met ten years ago after finishing from our respective colleges and have stayed friends ever since. Seeing him and his family is going to be a lot of fun.
Since my last post about Talkeetna, I've gone to Denali, ridden ATV's in Fairbanks, seen J.Wail perform in Sunshine Alaska, caught a salmon in Valdez, ridden a portion of the Al-Can, hung out with an Ice Climbing Guide, ridden the ferry for three days, and returned to the Lower 48. Posts will soon follow, but here are a few pictures from the last two weeks.
Here's a better shot of the beacon in Talkeetna. Even after the 4-wheelers and flight-seeing, Riding the Lightning still made for one of the coolest nights of my trip. (Yes - I went back to Talkeeta and got this photo and yes, it did rain the entire time I spent in Talkeetna... again.)
No, I didn't paint my bike. Riding the newer version of my bike made me glad I didn't have one, while making want one upon my return. What a machine! Just because the red bike has nearly 120k, doesn't mean it's an old bike. It is smooth and nice. This trip was about riding an OLD motorcycle across North America. However, once I've successfully completed that, a nice newer Goldwing will quickly climb to the top of my wish-list.
