21 - Quick Update
This will be quick indeed.
The last update was from two weeks ago. The last two weeks have been much different than the months preceding this part of the trip. Alaska is amazing. The Last Frontier indeed. The ride along the Alaskan Highway through the Yukon was daunting to say the least. I saw Moose, Elk, Caribou, Black Bear, Brown Bear, Deer, Buffalo, and Wolves. I saw them all from or on the road. There was nothing for thousands of miles. Nothing but an occasional gas pump.
The ride over the Top of the World Highway into Alaska was intense. It's 100+ miles of gravel along a mountain peak.
I arrived in Chicken Alaska only to realize my bike wasn't going to run. The next two days, I stayed in Chicken (a town of 7 in the winter and 20ish in the summer) and worked on my bike. I couldn't fix it, but met Bill who gave me a ride to Anchorage in his 81 Flatbed Ford. The twelve hour ride to Anchorage was a lot of fun. I got back on the road and am now in Homer after spending a couple of days in Seweard.
Finding wi-fi isn't hard, but finding wi-fi fast enough to upload pictures is impossible. I've uploaded a couple so I can post a quick update.
I'll be back in the lower 48 on the 21st.
In the last two weeks, I've: picked wild mountain blueberries with folks I've met. Stayed with new friends in an off-the-grid mountain cabin on land so remote and beautiful. And dealt with a mechanical failure that, at times, looked pretty bleak.
Unfortunately, my camera battery charger is gone and is quite proprietary so I'm trying to figure out how to get pictures of the scenery that is sure to be amazing on the ferry ride back to Washington.
